Spring is here at Mound Westonka High School, and with the change in season brings spring sports! This week the varsity and junior varsity girls golf team were interviewed about the first meet of the season. The girls compete in golf meets varying from one to three times a week, and the first meet of the season just happened to be this past Thursday, April 15th. Varsity’s first meet was located in Litchfield, and JV’s first meet was located in Dahlgreen. A varsity highlight at Thursday’s meet was Avery Finck and Gabby Barnett receiving third place in the best ball tournament.  Finck, team captain, also placed third at Burl Oaks this past week.  These are great results for the first meets of the season, and with the guidance from the new varsity coach John Wardlow and junior varsity coach Carrie Carlson, the girls are excited to continue to improve throughout the next couple of months.  Wardlow took over this season as head coach after long time coach, Pam Garvais announced her retirement.  Both Wardlow and Carlson bring experience to the team which has many returners and several new faces.  The team is led by captains Avery Finck, Gabby Barnett and Mackenzie Wallace

Varsity team member, Lauren Nash, a junior at Mound Westonka High School, was asked how Covid has affected this year’s golf season.  “Fortunately we are an outdoor sport therefore covid has not affected our season other than social distancing outside and the loss of the 2020 season.” The team was also asked if and how the golf team does team bonding. They replied “The golf team bonds the most during the van rides to meets.” They are pictured here at a stop at the Largest Ball of Twine.  We are looking forward to seeing how the rest of the girls golf season plays out this year!
